More Than Just Words Inside The Cover Of A Book
More and more, particularly in our schools, we see emphasis moving away from using books as a resource, in favor of the “instant” returns offered by the Internet. And while surfing the Net is great for researching school and work projects, it does not provide the same quality “down time” as taking a novel from your local book store, and curling up in a chair.
Reading is a pastime that we learn as children, with the help of parents that read to us, and introduce the written word as a stimulus to young minds and imaginations. Parents play a very large part in maintaining a child’s interest in reading, and can help foster it by taking their children with them to the local book store. There, you’ll be able to find free brochures and catalogues of what is available that is suitable to their age.
Even youngsters appreciate the opportunity to see that there is more to the world of reading than what they have at home. Books make great rewards for accomplishments at school, too. Allowing them to choose something when you visit a book store, lets them exercise their ability to make decisions based on their own preference. Next time they may select another kind of book all together, but they are sampling the world of reading, and that is the best part of encouraging their interests.
Parents are examples as well. A child who sees their parent with a book, is more inclined to see reading as a worthwhile activity. So stop at the book store and bring home something for you and your child, then sit down and enjoy them, together.
