The catalog began life as a way to sell necessities to those in far-flung areas, or who couldn’t buy essentials nearer to home. In today’s world, the catalog serves as a convenience for saving time when you want to compare prices and value on a given item, before ordering it.

A clothing catalog will still offer necessities, but more and more often, they are specialty editions which feature particular styles of clothing, sizes, and even seasonal or occasion wear.

In the beginning, you might have been able to get a bed frame or even a mattress from one of the early premier catalogs, but now home décor catalogs will offer an almost endless choice of period furniture, window treatments, and decorative accessories to make your home an oasis of individual taste.

Few farmers, the first “gardeners” in America, would ever have believed that one day people would be buying their seeds from gardening catalogs. But even commercial growers now, are resorting to wholesale supply catalogs for the best varieties of vegetables and grains for their area. And home gardeners are able to pick and choose what they want to grow next year, while snow is still on the ground.

One of the things that has remained the same however, is that most catalogs are still free. You can either write a company to request one, or visit their online site and fill out a form there. Depending on the type of business, there may be a small charge, which is often refunded on your first order.
