The average American consumer with a spouse and family, will buy most of their family’s daily wear, from stores that also carry other items. This is usually chalked up to a couple of reasons. One is convenience. Large stores offer the opportunity to get school clothes for the kids, while also picking up school supplies. The other reason is cost. Large retailers buy in large quantities, and are able to offer lower prices on the same item, than a clothing store that carries similar stock.

However, when it comes to specialty items like maternity clothing and plus size clothing, chains or large department stores, may simply not have the room to stock a varied selection of sizes, styles and materials.

Most major retailers have acknowledged the variations in body size, by adding departments for plus size clothing, but in many stores there may be only a token selection to choose from. The same situation exists for maternity clothing, and surprisingly, it appears that more and more department stores are downsizing their stock in this area, to just basic items such as undergarments and some casual wear.

For women who are bigger than the “fashionable” standards of size 2 and 4, it can be a big enough challenge to find clothing. But those who need what is considered plus size clothing, generally need to look for a specialty clothing store that will cater to their tastes in style, material, and colors.

The more stylish maternity clothing is also found in specialty stores, where staff are trained in helping expectant mothers to select items that will allow for room later in the pregnancy, or which can be mixed and matched with her present wardrobe.

One of the benefits of shopping specialty clothing store, is that very often small adjustments are done for free. And while you’re there, you can pick up a copy of their current catalogue, or ask to be added to their list for when the next season’s fashions, debut.
