The nickels are struck on the main floor of production of the United States Mint in Philadelphia and Denver. For the first time in 67 years the nickels will observe a brand new likeness of Thomas Jefferson, America’s third president. The “Liberty” inscription on the nickel coin is taken from Jefferson’s own handwriting. The design is taken from the marble bust of Jefferson which was completed in 1789.
The first if two new reverses on the 2005 nickel that you can receive will feature the American Bison. This is in recognition of the Native Americans and the wildlife that the famous explorers Lewis and Clark encountered on their infamous expedition to find out about the unknown American West. The journals of these two explorers described the buffalo as an animal which carried great significance to the Native Americans.
The Bison Nickel coins are a great collectable and they have historical significance as well as being a collector’s item.
