Signing Up For A Magazine Subscription - Are They Really Worth It?

The only time many consumers read a magazine, is in the waiting room of doctors, dentists, and even the auto repair shop. Depending on the type of magazine it is, the copies you see there may have been supplied free to that office, with the idea that sooner or later, a certain percentage of those that read them will either become regular buyers at retail outlets, or will take out a magazine subscription.

Likewise, homeowners frequently receive free magazines in the mail. These may be the initial issue of a new magazine, or it may be a promotional campaign by an established magazine that has printed an extra run to use as an advertising ploy. It may cost the publisher to print and mail the free magazines, but they will have forecast their cost versus profit, by calculating what percentage their magazine subscriptions will go up after the campaign.

Another favorite way of increasing their subscriber base, is through sales programs whereby groups such as high schools or service organizations, sell the magazine subscription at a substantially reduced price over the cost at a retail outlet. These too, will often include a free magazine or trial subscription, and they tend to appeal to consumers who want to read the magazine, and support the group selling them.

Are they subscriptions worth it? For the most part, yes. If you’re considering a particular offer, maybe one with a three-month free magazine trial, you’ll want to compare their initial subscription price, and their renewals. Sometimes the free magazine and the first year are enticements, where the renewals will put the costs almost on a par with regular retail sales cost.
