For The Love Of Teaching - Because Salaries Are Not The Attraction

In an economic climate of continued belt tightening in all federal and state departments, those who want to become a school teacher, do so for the love of the profession, because the salaries certainly aren’t an inducement.

In the beginning, when schools were taught by almost anyone who had an education themselves, which usually meant men, a teacher salary could be anything from furs, to wampum, to produce from farms, simply because counties did not have cash flows in the way of taxes or other income.

That was nearly four hundred years ago, and yet school districts and counties today, still find themselves struggling to provide an adequate teacher salary that will keep the truly dedicated and talented members of the profession, in the classroom without suffering burnout from personal financial stresses.

The move to try and put a teacher’s salary on a par with other professions, has stalled in recent years, partly due to budgetary restraints, and for other surprising reasons. In the latest figures available from the American Teachers Federation, it shows that in 2002-2003, the average teacher salary rose 3.3%, which is pretty much in keeping with the raises granted other professions, but the problem is that the pay was not on a par to start with. New teachers in that survey, were noted as starting off at a pay rate of $29,564 which was also a 3.2% hike from the previous year. But again, they are starting out at a lower level than many less stressful jobs that don’t require the same level of competency in such a wide range of topics.

One of the difficulties facing every school teacher in achieving wage parity, is that soaring health costs are eating up what raises they do get. In the same period as the above survey, health insurance costs leaped 13% over the previous year, more than four times the pay raises received.

Teachers looking to better their financial situation by changing locations, can access many free sites on the Internet, which will provide statistical data for the cities and states they are considering, and the record of pay rates there. At the same time, they’ll be able to get free health insurance quotes from providers in the same area.
