The Eternal Question - Is An Apple The Right Gift For A Teacher?

Although an apple for the teacher may seem “overdone” and out of style, trivia buffs will know that apples at one time were more than just a thank you for the teacher, they were actually their wages. In the early days of education in America, when money was scarce on the ground, a county would often pay their teacher in whatever “coin” the residents had. Apples, having come to America in the early 1600s, quickly became a prolific crop.

Consequently, the apple became not a teacher gift, but on occasion their actual pay, delivered by the bushel.

And with today’s creative artists, there are hundreds of items to choose as a teacher gift, which not only incorporate the apple theme, but good taste and usefulness as well. A scented candle embedded with apple peels, and smelling as American as apple pie, is a welcome present any time of the year.

For a teacher gift that doesn’t fall far from the tree of knowledge, you might choose a silver plated stainless steel paperweight in the shape of an apple. It’s a wonderful decorative item to hold down papers or tests on the desk or a shelf in the classroom.

Or, you might opt for something the teacher can enjoy at home, such as a garden flag in a theme that the children know they like. If their teacher enjoys baking for their own family, you can carry on the apple theme with a patterned pie plate and a pair of matching, apple decorated oven gloves.

Small presents to use as at teacher gift are easy to find at your local craft and gift stores, where you can pick up free catalogs for their current season. Let the children browse the pages and select the gift themselves. Or boot up the computer, and enter “teacher gift” as a search term and let them browse one of the thousands of sites with amusing and practical presents.
