Traffic is the key to having a successful Internet business right? The more targeted the traffic to your site the better your chances will be of making a sale. The question is how do you get more traffic. Basically you have to have a high ranking on search engines. This is pretty general though. Here are some ways that can give you a clearer idea of how search engine rankings work including a very important but often underestimated factor: keywords.

Keywords are basically “key words” that people will type into a search engine when they are interested in finding out about what they are trying to find information for. Search engines try to match the keyword or keywords that are typed with the content on the millions of pages the search engine looks through and then ranks the pages from the most applicable on down where their content has something to do with that keyword.

The search engine has various factors that it weighs in the search engines evaluation of how related a web page is to the keyword. But for those people who are trying to get a high page ranking these factors are for search engines to know and the rest of us to find out, basically they are unspoken. Search engines are always changing their criteria for how they perform searches in order to get better search results. But despite all the changes that search engines go though, what does not change is the way that a customer will search for what they are looking for on the Internet.

So you should not worry about the criteria of how a page will be ranked but instead try to make clear-cut content on your site to keywords that are appropriate. There are a lot of tools out there available in order to help you to research keywords. Many of these tools can also be free of charge. You are looking for keywords that will be searched for the most often and describe what you are offering with your website in a way where people who are searching for that will find it with their search. This is called targeted traffic. You can have a lot of traffic come to your site but if it not targeted than many of the people searching will not be looking for what you offer. But when keywords are used to describe what you are offering in detail it will be easier for you to make a sale because those who searched have found exactly what they are looking for.

It also helps to be more specific when it comes to using keywords as well. If you have a computer company that if someone types “computer” millions of pages will come up. But if you specialize in something use that keyword to narrow down the pages available that will have the same offers as you.
