Wedding Rings - The Circle of Love
In ancient cultures, the third finger was thought to contain a vein that traveled directly to the heart. That’s why they forged rings out of iron for lastingness, and in a circle to symbolize eternity, and placed it on the third finger of the left hand when a couple were joined together.
In the latter dynasties of Egypt, before the minting of coins, their gold was molded into rings. Because it was such a precious metal, when a husband wanted to show his trust in his wife, he placed one of them on her finger, and it became her wedding ring.
A similar tradition held for many centuries, with rings of various metals given on the promise of marriage. The richer the man, the higher quality of metal in the engagement ring, which also served as a wedding ring.
That all changed in 1215A.D. when the Pope decreed that there should be a longer interval between engagement and marriage for the couple to ponder the holy state of matrimony. As a consequence, women ended up with an engagement ring, wedding ring, and a husband!
About the same time, the actual marriage ceremony involved placing the ring on the Bible to be blessed. After that, the groom took the wedding ring and placed it in succession, on the bride’s left thumb, and three fingers, reciting as he did, “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost, Amen”. There appeared to be no set rule for which hand the ring was place on, and occasionally it would be worn on the right hand for the period of engagement, and the left hand after marriage, which may be how the custom arose in modern times, of wearing the engagement ring on the right hand, to be placed over the wedding ring on the left hand, after the ceremony.
Tidbits like this can be found for free, on the Internet. Collect them over the months leading up to your wedding, print them off your computer, and cut them up to be included in your wedding favors, then watch the guests exchanging them.
